Season One Recap
Sixteen year old Violet "Vi" Morgan has recently moved to the small coastal city of Garreton, Australia. The Morgan family is still on edge after Peter suffered a nervous breakdown following a severe case of writers block.
Over protective mother, Caroline, is desperately trying to hold the family together but with the antics of eleven year old science geek, Cam and the constant rebelliousness of Penny, she's finding it difficult.
Within Vi's first few days at school, she makes a new friend in the uncool Shane Evans and almost befriends Queen Bee, Bianca Parry before turning down her friendship for that of Shane's.
As a form of revenge, Bianca pulls a prank on Vi, earning the new girl an after school detention. As Vi walks home that night in the pouring rain, she stumbles upon the body of a dead girl. She runs for help and enters a liquor store - only to find herself in the middle of a robbery. Vi is shot by the robber, who flees the scene as Bianca and her boyfriend, seventeen year old heart throb, Erin Fowler, watch on in horror.
Vi dies and finds herself in a mysterious elevator which opens into a reception office. Vi struggles to understand what is happening to her until she meets Andrew Friar, a twenty-four year old slacker who doesn't care about anything or anyone.
Andrew, along with the authoratative and commanding boss, Alistair Benson and sweet yet distant "Assignment Co-Ordinator", Jenna Cooke, introduces Vi to the world of the Company. A supernatural group that repairs breaks in the "connections" of the universe.
Vi is told that she will never be able to see her family and friends again unless she agrees to work for the Company and she reluctantly signs the contract - waking up in the city morgue as if nothing had ever harmed her.
As Vi struggles with her second chance at life, she finds that she can not tell anyone about the Company - both because they'd think she was insane and the Company has an extremely strict confidentiality policy that they will enforce to the fullest extent possible. She is partnered with Andrew, who is to act as her Mentor to the Company until she's able to go it alone.
Her first assignment leads her to Bianca who is almost snatched by the same guy that murdered the girl Vi found. Through various Signs (messages sent from a mysterious Power to guide Company employees in a time of need), Vi catches the murderer and saves the day.
In following episodes, Vi's assignments force her to get along with Penny (1x03), face her fear of working for the Company (1x04) and open up about how her new life is affecting her emotionally (1x05). Her conflict with Bianca increases as Bianca doesn't remember Vi saving her from the murderer in 1x02, due to a memory wipe implemented by Doc, the Company's lab technician. Bianca's boyfriend, Erin, starts to take an interest in Vi.
Shane's friendship with Vi starts to crumble as he begins to tire of her constant excuses and ducking out on promises. Through one of Vi's assignments, Shane re-connects with his father, Tom, who he hasn't spoken to in two years. But this causes trouble with Lori, Shane's mother, who doesn't wish for him to be a part of Shane's life. Lori finds out about Shane's phone conversations with Tom and is forced to re-evaluate what her son really needs (1x11).
Bianca and Erin's relationship is on the rocks when Bianca realises that Erin has feelings for Vi. She hopes that this is something he'll simply get over but after bonding with Vi's sister, Penny, (thanks to an assignment of Vi's), Bianca breaks it off with Erin - leaving him to confess his feelings to Vi (1x08) and they later officially become a couple.
Within the Company, Jenna shows promise at someday taking over the Director reigns from Benson, Vi meets a range of new employees and a two year misunderstanding involving a failed assignment of Andrew's is finally cleared up, resulting in Benson giving Andrew regular duty assignments again, as well as being Vi's mentor (1x09).
It is also around this time that Vi discovers that the Company has more than one branch in each city. The "Breakers", working through an entirely different office building, deal with the assignments in which a connection exists that needs to be broken. Vi meets Nathan Percy, a runner for the Breakers, while on assignment.
Things start to get more complicated on the home front when Cam begins secretly investigating Vi, even going so far as to build some kind of scientific shrine to her in his room. This continues until his investigation into her behaviour almost gets him and Vi arrested (1x09). Meanwhile, Peter begins to display signs that another breakdown is on the way and this sends Caroline into a tailspin. However, Vi doesn't pay much attention to her father's problems when she is forced to reveal her secret life to Shane or otherwise lose his friendship forever (1x11).
The Company is quick to discover this blunder and Vi enlists the help of Andrew and Jenna to save Shane's memory from being erased. This is finally done when Vi convinces Benson and the Company's head of security, Gabrielle Dautry, that the Power behind the Company somehow wanted Shane to know of its existence, demonstrated by his involvement in past assignments (1x12). Thankful at having dodged this particular bullet, Vi returns home only to discover that the book Peter has been secretly working on contains the story of Vi's life in the Company!
Vi attempts to duplicate the "Shane situation" in sparing her father's memory. However, Jenna - feeling guilty about keeping secrets from Benson - tells her boss and loses the respect of Andrew and Vi. Benson informs Vi that the knowledge of the book runs too deeply in Peter's mind and a simple memory wipe will not be sufficient.
In the end, Vi agrees to destroy all items, files and notebooks dealing with the book - ultimately ruining her father's chance at a successful career as a writer and damaging his mental state even more.
As the season ends, we are left with a multitude of questions. Will Peter ever forgive Vi? How will her family deal with Vi's increasingly odd behaviour? Will Jenna win back the trust of those she cares about? And, most importantly, who is W. R. Crenshaw - the name in Peter's book acknowledged with inspiring the "ideas" within the not-so-fictional work of fiction?
